Tura, Oct 11: Chief minister Conrad Sangma, who along with the whole state administrative machinery had been preoccupied with flood and landslide mitigation for the past one week, took his time on Friday to keep up his commitment for the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign.
He participated in a cleaning drive at Tura Market Complex where he also wore the hat of a painter to paint a boundary wall as part of a beautification drive.
The Swachhata Hi Seva fortnight, a campaign led by prime minister Narendra Modi and taken part by leaders across the country, began on September 17 and concluded on October 2.
Holding the brush while white-washing the wall, Conrad said, “We are doing this to promote cleanliness of our towns and cities. We want our community to get involved, our officials to get involved, government people to get involved, so that we do small things. But these small things can help us make our towns and cities more beautiful.”
“Basic cleanliness is important, but what is also important is that our walls should be painted. We would like to see all government spaces, on the main road, all the private buildings, everybody should take initiative to paint their walls. So, if everybody paints their own walls, their boundary walls, I think our Tura town will look much better. Similarly, Shillong and Jowai should follow,” he added.
Deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills and other senior officials from district administration and Tura Municipal Board were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the chief minister took a walk across the town and advised officials on steps to be taken to improve certain points on the route.
