New cultural, tourism amenities for Nongkrem Dance open at Smit
Shillong, Dec 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has emphasised that unity and inclusivity among various socio-religious communities is a crucial to holistic development of the state.
“For the state to develop, we have to move forward together in unity and inclusivity, ensuring development benefits everyone,” he said during inauguration of cultural and tourism projects for Nongkrem Dance at Smit in East Khasi Hills on Wednesday.

Addressing the issue of existing social divisions, he urged the people to move beyond regional bias and embrace unity.
Meanwhile, in a crucial step towards promoting Meghalaya’s cultural heritage, new cultural and tourism amenities for Nongkrem Dance were inaugurated at Lum Pomblang and Madan Syiem, Smit.
The project has extended development beyond the dance grounds, including Madan Syiem and other local grounds.
In his address, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the state’s cultural heritage.
Recalling his first visit to Smit to witness the Nongkrem Dance three-and-a-half years ago, he noted that despite decades of statehood, the cultural identity of the tribal community had not been fully preserved.
“I share this not as a criticism, but as a reflection. In that moment, I felt strongly that this needed to change. I was determined that we would do whatever it takes to give due respect to our traditions and culture—to protect, preserve, and promote them,” he said.
Reaffirming that the government’s decisions are driven by need, equity, and fairness, he cited the consistent outreach of his administration over the past seven-and-a-half years to communities across all regions and religions.
He further emphasised that progress must always be measured by its tangible impact on people’s lives.

Encouraging cultural programmes, the Chief Minister stated that such initiatives would showcase Meghalaya’s diverse communities, boost tourism, strengthen the local economy, and preserve cultural heritage.
Acknowledging long-standing delays in infrastructure projects, he assured the public that his government remains committed to completing major sports infrastructure projects in collaboration with traditional heads.
He also pledged attention to improving connectivity through bridges, retaining walls, and other vital infrastructure in the region.
In his address, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong noted that this initiative reflects the leadership’s commitment to inclusivity and progress.
He further informed the gathering that the government has plans to beautify the Iewduh market to enhance convenience, safety, and the overall experience for locals and visitors alike.

Addressing the occasion, former KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem said such developments would significantly improve the lives of the people.
Meanwhile, Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Dr BS Syiem expressed gratitude to the government for its commitment to ensure that the project was carried out in the right manner.
Sordar of Smit, P Nongbri, underscored the significance of Smit as the headquarters of Hima Khyrim and as a central hub supporting more than a hundred neighbouring villages.
He outlined the community’s need for a football stadium, upgradation of Smit PHC and Smit College.
