Shillong, Jan 20: In what can be a game changer in mental development of children in Meghalaya, the Early Child Development (ECD) Framework and ECD content package were launched by chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday.
The ECD content package comprises training materials for caregivers and frontline workers developed by Sesame Workshop in collaboration with the state government.
ECD framework is significant considering that the child’s analytical and cognitive skills are developed during the ECD stage.
“This time (ECD) is also crucial to develop values of cleanliness, respect for the environment, patriotism, nationalism and in being a responsible citizen,” the chief minister said in his address, adding, “Having activities that will incorporate values and principles should be a part of the curriculum.”
Elaborating on the extensive work behind preparation of the ECD framework and contents, he said, “A lot of research has gone in the past one-and-a-half years in developing the ECD content that has been tailor made for our state.”
He underlined the need for the customised content, saying, “It is critical to understand the local challenges while using the local culture, knowledge and systems that already exists to which children, teachers and parents can relate to.”
A tailor made curriculum and content suitable for the state will add to the ECD programme’s success, he further said.
He also said a lot of care and thought have gone into the planning of the ECD Mission.
“The next crucial step is the implementation,” he said.
He also informed that the programme has gained a lot of attention from South East Asian region.
“It can be a great game changer, a learning experience and a model for others to follow,” he added.
He further spoke about the different programmes of the state government that have shifted from scheme based programmes to focus on the individuals and the beneficiaries.
Besides senior government officials, representatives of Sesame Workshop were also present on the occasion.
