CM opens Meghalaya’s finest police station in Jengjal, says 3000 vacancies in state force near completion

Jengjal, Nov 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today opened the state’s most advanced police station at Jengjal, 30 kms from Tura, hailing it as “one of the best in Meghalaya” and announcing that his government is on the verge of completing the recruitment process for 3000 new recruits into the state force.

Perched at a strategic gateway that links West, North, and East Garo Hills, the sleek new facility, that promises safety for the inhabitants of the region, drew a constellation of dignitaries, including Meghalaya’s first woman Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western Range) J F K Marak, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal, District Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma and James Pangsang K Sangma, Chairman of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

In a stirring address, the chief minister hailed the station as “one of the best in Meghalaya,” given its strategic positioning for lightning-fast response times. “This isn’t just a building—it’s a lifeline,” Conrad K Sangma declared, saluting the local Nokma and residents who generously donated the land.

Gone are the days of red tape strangling repairs, said the chief minister as he revealed the game-changing Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund, empowering Superintendents to fix up stations without bureaucratic delays. “We’ve already revitalized dozens,” said the chief minister as he credited the fund for giving a new leash of life for police outposts and other infrastructure. “A massive recruitment drive for over 3,000 vacancies is hurtling toward completion, with interviews underway. This could be the biggest hiring spree in state history. It’ll plug every gap, ensuring no corner of Garo Hills feels forgotten,” said Conrad Sangma.

The chief minister also announced the latest development concerning the Baljek airport at Jengjal that had been dormant for years and had been recently handed over to the Airport Authority of India.

Sangma dropped a bombshell- announcing the sanction of Rs 50 crore before month’s end to kickstart upgrades  to the airport. “Imagine 19-seater Air Alliance flights zipping between Shillong and Tura,” he enthused and added that the government is even hunting prime land here for mega-events, turning this junction into Meghalaya’s event epicenter.

Lauding the state police force for playing a pivotal role in enforcing order and nurturing peace, the chief minister said “We’ve poured tech into cyber defenses, surveillance, and crowd control—putting Meghalaya shoulder-to-shoulder with the best.” He also called for empathy amid enforcement, stating “Be firm, but never forget the human spark—care, compassion, sensitivity. We’re servants first, or we’re nothing.”

Chairperson of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation and former Home Minister, Shri James P. K. Sangma, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for his support in securing sanctions and ensuring timely completion of the project. He further stated that the upgraded facility would greatly benefit residents through improved policing and enhanced security. He further appraised the Chief Minister about the problems faced by the people regarding water supply issues and placed his proposal for a new water tank, a playground with a gallery, and other developmental initiatives for the area.

Meghalaya DGP Smt. Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, recalled her earlier days in Jengjal and expressed her appreciation to the Chief Minister for prioritizing the welfare and capacity-building of the Police Department. She assured the public that the police personnel would continue to uphold their duties with responsibility and dedication.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including Local MDC Grahambell A. Sangma, DIG (Western Range) J. F. K. Marak, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Shri Vibhor Agarwal, IAS, Superintendent of Police Shri Abraham T. Sangma, IPS, Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese Most Rev. Victor Lyngdoh, Vicar General Fr. Richard Majaw, Heads of Departments, community leaders, and residents of the area.
