Competitions, cleanliness drive mark Swachhata Hi Seva in GH

Shillong, Sept 26: A Swachhata Hi Seva programme was held at Garo Union Higher Secondary School, Shillong where students combined cleanliness and environmental awareness with art and sports quiz competitions as part of the celebration.

Organised by the Central Bureau of Communication, Shillong, students actively showcased their knowledge. Winners were felicitated with prizes and certificates to encourage their learning and teamwork. Also, as part of the nationwide campaign “Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath: Voluntary Shramdhaan”, students, teachers and officials joined hands in a cleaning drive around the school campus.

This was followed by a Plantation Drive under “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, where students planted saplings dedicated to their mothers, symbolizing care for both family and the environment.

Wompher Shadap, Capacity Building Specialist, SBM-U, Urban Affairs Department, spoke about various aspects of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and highlighted the different activities being carried out by his department as part of the initiative and as a regular practice. 

He explained how the approach to cleanliness and sanitation has evolved in recent times due to the active participation of the community, government and other stakeholders. He emphasized that Swachhata is not just a one-day activity but a continuous effort, encouraging students to take pride in maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and to act as ambassadors of change in their communities.

O. Sumer, District Health Education Officer, EKH addressed the students on the significance of nutrition. She explained that a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals is essential for growth, immunity and learning capacity. She encouraged students to eat nutritious meals regularly, include fruits and vegetables in their diet, and drink clean water. She conducted an interactive session in which students listed healthy foods they could incorporate into their meals and concluded by urging them to take a pledge to maintain good nutrition habits and promote healthy eating among peers.

The programme was attended by Ashok Kumar, Vice Principal, L. Thapa, Assistant Teacher, Karnesh S. Sangma, Sports Teacher along with other teachers of the school, who encouraged students to participate actively in all activities and appreciated CBC Shillong for organizing the initiative.

The school authorities lauded the programme, noting that the combination of competitions, cleanliness activities, and awareness talks created a holistic learning experience. They expressed gratitude to CBC Shillong for organizing such impactful initiatives that nurture knowledge while instilling values of discipline, responsibility and community service.
