Conrad refutes uranium mining claims in Garo Hills

Shillong, Oct 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has denied outright allegations of uranium mining in Garo Hills and sought anyone having proof of such happening, if any, to come forward.

Reacting to recent allegations made by BJP MDC from Tura, Bernard N Marak, the Chief Minister said there is no evidence of any such activity taking place.

“Leaders in responsible position should not just come up with statements just because they want to grab attention or maybe just make our statement,” he said.

Making an appeal to such leaders to come forward with details and proof, he promised immediate action, if there is evidence.

He reiterated the government’s firm stance against uranium mining, saying, “I have made our position very clear that we are firm that uranium mining should not take place.”

However, he said, it is a matter of concern if any uranium mining activity is going on without government’s knowledge.

“There could be situations where some incidence could be there, which may not have come to the notice of the Government. If the evidence is there… please give that to us we will be more than happy to take necessary action on it,” he added.
