Shillong, Jan 20: The 6th Meghalaya Games will be formally inaugurated by chief minister Conrad K Sangma sports minister Shakliar Warjri at Jowai in West Jaintia Hills district.
The sporting extravaganza scheduled is all set to kick off with a torch relay that was flagged off on January 17 from PA Sangma Stadium, Tura and went through Shillong.
Over 3,500 athletes – highest among all editions of Meghalaya Games – are competing for 1,600 medals across 23 venues, including two venues in Shillong and Laitkor.
For the first time, seven para-athletes – four women and three men – are taking part in para-shooting event (pistol and rifles).
Earlier, torch relay was led by golfer Jason Passah and athlete Himonki Khaii in Tura, and Meghalaya police constable Okitlang Syiemlieh in Shillong.
On Tuesday, the torch will make its way from Thadlaskein and will reach the Games’ main stage in Wahiajer Stadium where the final torchbearer will hand off the flame, symbolising the passing of the torch to the host city.
