Delhi: Couple, 2-year-old daughter killed in Budh Vihar shanty fire

New Delhi, Apr 15: A couple and their two-year-old daughter were charred to death after a massive fire ripped through a cluster of shanties near Mange Ram Park in Delhi’s Budh Vihar area early Wednesday, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said.

According to the DFS official, a call regarding the blaze was received around 1.25 am, following which seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Thick smoke and flames were seen in the area, he said.

Firefighters recovered three charred bodies from the site. The deceased have been identified as Mosibur Dastagir (23), his wife Monara Sekh (19) and their daughter Maimuna.

After the fire brigade controlled the flames, forensic and crime teams inspected the spot to ascertain the exact cause of the blaze, the police said.

The police said that a PCR call was received at the Budh Vihar police station regarding a raging blaze in an empty plot near Mange Ram Park. On reaching the spot, it was found that four temporary huts used by rag-pickers had caught fire.

“During an inquiry, it was revealed that the fire broke out at around 12.45 am due to unknown reasons and spread rapidly due to the temporary structures and scrap material. Five people managed to escape safely from the fire,” read a statement from the police.

The DFS official said that three people were found dead inside a locked hut.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Budh Vihar police station, and further investigation is ongoing. (PTI)
