Dense fog disrupts air travel: 18 flights delayed at Guwahati airport

Guwahati, Jan 23: Passengers at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) faced disruptions on Thursday as 18 flights were delayed due to dense fog and inclement weather conditions in the morning hours.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation over East Bangladesh and its surrounding areas, up to 1.5 km above mean sea level, has contributed to the foggy conditions affecting air traffic in Guwahati.

In response to the disruptions, Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) deployed additional personnel across the terminal to assist passengers. The airport authority also arranged extra seating and drinking water facilities for travellers experiencing delays.

“As part of our commitment to passenger safety and comfort, LGBIA has made necessary provisions to support affected passengers,” GIAL said in an official statement. “We urge passengers to stay updated with their respective airlines regarding flight schedules before arriving at the airport,” an official state of GIAL stated.

Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director General (DDG) of RMC-IMD, provided insights into the current weather patterns, indicating that light to moderate rainfall is expected in a few areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

“Assam may witness isolated spells of light rain, while Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will likely experience dry weather conditions,” he said.

Shallow to moderate fog is anticipated in various pockets across the northeastern states, with possible light snowfall in higher altitudes of Arunachal Pradesh.

No significant change in minimum temperature is expected across the region.

Guwahati recorded a temperature of 18°C throughout the day, with a mild breeze at 1.67 km/h, gusting up to 2.07 km/h. With partly cloudy skies in the forecast, foggy conditions are expected to persist for the remainder of the week.

Passengers are advised to check real-time flight updates with their respective airlines before heading to the airport. Authorities are closely monitoring weather conditions to minimize further disruptions and ensure smooth operations.
