Shillong, May 17: Concerned over influx of illegal outsiders, the state government has ordered inspection of construction sites across the state to detect illegal migrant workers.
Informing about the directive, minister in-charge Labour Shakliar Warjri on Friday said, “Just a few weeks ago, I had chaired a review meeting and gave a timeline to all my labour inspectors to conduct inspection of all construction sites in every block and every district.”

“We are taking things seriously when it comes to this matter,” Warjri said while referring to the issue of influx.
He was responding to a query on detection of several illegal migrant labourers during anti-influx drives conducted by NGOs across the state.
Stating that it is mandatory for all migrant labourers to register themselves with the department, Warjri said, “I am not aware of this what you mentioned relating to fear of influx. It has not come to my notice, but if there is something like that, we will look into the matter.”

On contractors’ failure to register these labourers engaged by them in different construction sites, the minister said, “Once any person is being awarded contract work, before giving the final work order, he has to register all labourers. It is mandatory. I don’t think there is anything like that.”
