Shillong, Mar 11: From January till date this year, one drug related case was registered in the plain belt areas of West Garo Hills district. The case was registered with Tikrikilla police station, informed social welfare minister Paul Lyngdoh in reply to a question in the Assembly on Tuesday.
However, the minister said, there has been an increase in the number of drug peddlers and smugglers in the plain belt areas, owing to its proximity to Bangladesh, neighbouring Assam and also West Bengal (through Brahmaputra river).
Lyngdoh also informed about formation of Anti Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) in the district in order to combat drug trafficking and other cases related to National Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the district.
Besides, a Centrally-funded addiction treatment facility is available at Tura Civil Hospital for victims of drug abuse.
