Shillong, Dec 22: Deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has slammed Assam-based Hindu group Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) for serving a “deadline” to Meghalaya government to reopen Mawjymbuin cave at Mawsynram for Hindu rituals.
““Who are they? They cannot give a deadline to the state government,” Dhar told reporters on Sunday.
“They (KSP) should first know the land tenure system in the state. Land (in Meghalaya) is mainly private. It (Mawjymbuin cave) is on private land, so whatever they (land owners) decide, it is up to them,” Dhar stated.
The cave, which has a Shivling like structure revered by the Hindus, was closed for conducting rituals by the local dorbar shnong due to various reasons.
KSP had issued a 10-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding reopening of the cave for rituals and warned of blocking arterial routes of Meghalaya, especially Shillong-Guwahati road at Jorabat, if their demand is not met within the period.
The “deadline” expires on 25 December i.e. Christmas.
