EKH accounts for bulk of Meghalaya’s DoNER projects

Shillong, April 20: Meghalaya currently has 83 ongoing development projects under various central schemes, with nearly half driven by the North Eastern Council (NEC), according to the latest monthly progress report of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

District-wise, East Khasi Hills has emerged as the clear hub of activity, hosting 45 projects—more than half of the state’s total. In contrast, most other districts have only a handful of projects each, pointing to an uneven distribution of development initiatives.

The report presents a mixed picture—steady movement across sectors, but with a sizeable number of projects yet to take off. NEC accounts for the largest share with 41 ongoing projects, followed by 30 under NESIDS (OTRI), while a smaller number fall under road and PM-DevINE schemes. These projects cut across key sectors such as education, water supply, livelihoods, and infrastructure, reflecting a broad-based development push in the state.

In terms of progress, 17 projects worth ₹194.02 crore have achieved 100% physical completion, but an equal number—17 projects—have yet to register any physical progress. Another 29 projects are nearing completion with progress between 75% and 100%, while 10 are in the mid-stage and 10 remain in early stages. The trend indicates that while a pipeline of projects is moving forward, delays in execution continue to be a concern.

Financial closure also remains an issue. Of the 17 physically completed projects, only six have achieved 100% financial progress, suggesting pending payments or delays in fund utilisation.

The projects underway reflect a mix of grassroots and infrastructure interventions, including school upgrades in West Khasi Hills, water supply schemes in Sohra, livelihood and craft-based training centres in Garo Hills, as well as handloom and irrigation-related initiatives.
