Farmers learn processing, preservation of local fruits 

Shillong Sept 15: To boost local economies and promote sustainable agricultural practices in South Garo Hills, a 5-day programme was held at Krishi Vigyan Kendra in South Garo Hills where participants were trained on the value addition of locally-available fruits.

Around 50 farmers from Chokpot sub-division participated in the training which was meant to enhance local agriculture by reducing post-harvest losses and fostering entrepreneurship. 

The training, held under the theme ‘Value addition of locally available fruits’ under 100 Days Action Plan, imparted new skills to the trainees where hands-on training in processing and preserving local fruits such as Te.kring, Chinara, Assam lemon (Kakji), Aonla (Ambare) and Tomato (Baringbaliti) were taught.

Over the course of the programme, methods of making Te.kring pickle, Chinara Ready to Serve (RTS) drinks, Assam lemon Squash, Tomato ketchup and Aonla pickle were taught by the course co-ordinator, Basu Langpoklakpam, subject matter specialist (Horticulture).

The training was organised in collaboration with Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society, BMMU, Chokpot and was held from September 9 to September 13.
