Fingerlings distributed to empower local farmers

Umiam, Nov 2: A one-day training session to equip local farmers with practical knowledge and resources to enhance their aquaculture practices was held in Ri Bhoi on Friday.

The Integrated Fish Farming System under NICRA TDC, conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (ICAR-KVK), aimed to bolster the productivity and sustainability of fish farming within the district.

As part of the initiative, 5,000 high-quality fingerlings were distributed to ten local farmers who participated in the programme, enabling them to put their newly acquired skills into practice and strengthen their aquaculture production.

Highlighting the benefits of the fingerling distribution programme by KVK, Dr M Mokidul Islam, principal scientist and Head of KVK, Ri Bhoi said the initiative provides high-quality fingerlings tailored for pond culture. He noted that these fingerlings can be maintained with traditional feeding methods, making them an accessible and cost-effective resource for farmers seeking to improve their yields.

Bankitkupar Mukhim, subject matter specialist in Fishery Science, led an in-depth session on maximizing the benefits of integrated fish farming. His presentation covered strategies for combining various livestock and crops with fisheries to reduce production costs and increase profitability. Additionally, Mukhim provided a detailed guide on pond management practices, including strategies for managing fish health during disease outbreaks.
