Former Garo militant nabbed with illegal gun

Tura, Feb 3: A former militant from the Garo outfit A’chik National Volunteers Council ( Breakaway faction) has been arrested by police in East Garo Hills and one unlicensed pistol seized from his possession during a special operation on Sunday.

East Garo Hills police chief S A Rynjah said that a special operation was launched on the basis of credible inputs about the possession of illegal arms and ammunition.

In that operation police identified the former militant Mexbal K. Marak alias Menil (44 yrs) from village Silchanggittim under Rongjeng Police Station, to be the man with the illegal weapon.

He was apprehended from a place called Baringgre Chambildam and one 7.65 mm Pistol (Chinese-made) was recovered from his possession.

During preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that he was a member of the
ANVC-B militant group, having joined the outfit in the year 2008. He had surrendered during the peace agreement in 2015.

This is the second seizure of weapons from East Garo Hills in the last one week. A few days ago, several hundred rounds of live AK ammunition and mortar shells belonging to the GNLA outfit were unearthed from a nungle hideout in Rongjeng region of the district.
