Tura, Oct 4: Former legislator of North Tura constituency Noverfield R Marak has passed away following prolonged ill health. He was 72.
Late Noverfield Marak was the first MLA of newly carved North Tura constituency, post delimitation of assembly constituencies. He was elected on a Congress ticket in 2013 and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary during the tenure of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
He lost the 2018 assembly elections from North Tura to NPP’s Thomas A Sangma. He later joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) under Mukul Sangma’s leadership but opted out of the race for the 2023 assembly polls after the TMC allotted the party ticket to former Tura MDC Rupert M Sangma. Thomas A Sangma of the NPP went on to retain the North Tura seat. He was also briefly with the NPP.
He had joined politics after his retirement from government service. He was the district transport officer of South Garo Hills and held other senior positions in the state transport department.
A nature lover, he played a key role in the setting up of a local environmental group called ADRA (Asima Dingsima Rangsaljong Association) in Tura.
A few months ago, the former legislator had undergone a medical procedure for an underlying health issue. He would have turned 73 next month.
