Garo Hills observes annual Police Commemoration Day

Ampati, Oct 21: Tributes were paid to the brave souls in uniform who gave their lives in the line of duty during the annual Police Commemoration Day observance that was held across the five districts of Garo Hills.

Garo Hills witnessed one of the darkest days of militancy for well over two decades resulting in the loss of many innocent lives, including many a fallen soldier from the state police and paramilitary forces while battling the ANVC, and later the dreaded GNLA militant outfits.

The District Police of South West Garo Hills solemnly observed Police Commemoration Day on Monday, at the office premises of the Superintendent of Police (SP) to honour the ultimate sacrifice of police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The event featured a Sok Parade, a gun salute, and the laying of wreaths as tributes to the martyrs.

Speaking at the occasion, Superintendent of Police, Billy Graham Marak highlighted the significance of the day, reflecting on the tragic events of 1959 when a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrol was ambushed by Chinese forces in Ladakh, resulting in the deaths of 10 Indian policemen. He stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers to ensure the safety and security of the nation.

DySP Headquarters Shri Ravi K. Sangma, MPS, honored the fallen heroes by reading the names of 213 police personnel from across the country who made the ultimate sacrifice between 1st September 2023 and 31st August 2024. These officers gave their lives in the line of duty to protect the nation and its people.

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the bravery, dedication, and selflessness demonstrated by the police force in their commitment to uphold law and order.
