Gathering prohibited at disputed Shillong church site

Shillong, Dec 11: In a bid to prevent a potential law and order situation, the District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District, RM Kurbah, has prohibited any gathering at the disputed site of the Presbyterian Church at Ksehpyndeng.

The order, issued under Section 163 BNSS, comes in the wake of a dispute between two factions of the church, with one faction planning to re-baptize older residents of the locality on December 12, 2025, which is strongly opposed by the rival faction.

In her order, Kurbah stated that she is satisfied that the move to re-baptize the residents may escalate tensions and result in a serious breach of law and order. Any violation of the order will be prosecuted under Section 223 of the BNS.

The order is effective immediately and will remain in force until further notice.
