Govt asks NHIDCL to speed up Shillong-Dawki road project

Tynsong reviews work on key road projects implemented by NHIDCL

Shillong, June 23: The state government has asked the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) expedite the work in four-lane Shillong-Dawki road to meet the project’s 2026 deadline.

After reviewing some key road projects implemented by NHIDCL, deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong, in-charge of Public Works Department (Roads), expressed satisfaction over progress of the project despite challenges posed by frequent rains.

The deputy chief minister also reviewed progress of Shillong Western Bypass, Speed Corridor, and Tura Bypass.

“I am very sure they will be able to complete it (Shillong-Dawki road) as indicated in the contract order by the NHIDCL. I have seen the work is progressing well,” he told reporters after the meeting on Monday.

The project includes packages at Pynursla where work is progressing well.

Tynsong informed that the Shillong Western Bypass project faces land-related issues, with some individuals claiming ownership.

He directed district collectors to resolve these issues, ensuring the project’s progress isn’t affected. The deadline for completion is 2026.

“I have given direction to all district collectors to resolve this issue and make sure progress of work is not affected and to ensure people making such claims have proper documents otherwise they cannot just blindly claim like that,” Tynsong said.

The deputy chief minister also reviewed the survey for the Speed Corridor starting from Umiam to Meghalaya-Assam border and informed that it is nearing completion.

He informed that the district collectors are working with NHIDCL to finalise the central line of the road, with progress reported in all four districts: Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills.

Discussions are on with landowners and traditional heads for land acquisition for the project, he said.

On the progress of Tura Bypass, Tynsong said the date of commencement and completion of the project is yet to be finalised.
