Govt aware of SSA teachers’ demands: Paul

Shillong, Oct 9: SSA teachers, who have been staging sit-in protest for the past nine days, on Wednesday took out a protest march demanding a meeting with chief minister Conrad K Sangma and education minister Rakkam A Sangma.

However, in absence of both of them, minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh gave an audience to the teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA).

The AMSSASTA’s demands include 100 per cent enhancement of the salary of over 13,000 SSA teachers in the state.

The teachers took out the protest to seek intervention of the chief minister and education minister to fulfil their demand.

“He (Paul Lyngdoh) told us that yes the government is aware (of the demand) and that the education minister had already submitted a representation to the chief minister and would again submit his second representation for consideration of the government,” said Peter Thyrniang, president of the association, after meeting the minister.

Meanwhile, he said, the sit-in protest would continue until a concrete step taken by the government to fulfill the teachers’ demands.
