Shillong, Aug 28: Revenue and disaster management minister Kyrmen Shylla has assured that the government is doing its best to provide necessary support to flood-affected people in Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Shylla said while rain is a blessing, it also poses challenges, and the department is doing its best to mitigate the impact.
Although the department is well-prepared to respond to natural and man-made calamities, he said, it’s impossible to achieve hundred per cent success and that collective efforts can make a significant difference.
The minister said the department is working to provide necessities to people, especially travellers, during flood-related disruptions.
Sharing his personal experience of being stuck in traffic due to flash floods on the way from Guwahati, he emphasised the need for proper drainage systems to prevent such incidents.
Poor drainage can led to flash floods even on the road, and it’s essential to address this issue, he said.
Admitting that he is not an expert in this field, the minister however stressed the importance of finding solutions to the drainage problem.
He said the government’s engineers try their best to construct infrastructure, but there is a need to look into drainage issues to prevent flood-related challenges.
The minister reassured that the government is committed to providing support and necessities to people affected by floods.
According to him, collective efforts are essential to mitigate the impact of floods and ensure the safety of travellers.
