Shillong, Nov 4: The state government has sanctioned Rs 45 crore to resurface major roads in Shillong with an aim to complete the work within the current working season.
Informing this on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar, said the resurfacing would overall improve the city’s infrastructure.
The work is expected to be completed within the current working season, he said.
He also outlined measures to improve public transport in Shillong, focusing on reducing traffic congestion.
Terming traffic congestion as a major challenge, he mentioned about initiatives to develop new parking lots to address the issue.
He also informed that the government is planning to shift offices to the New Shillong Township.
“So, within 5-6 years, the new township should be in place and most of the old offices will be moved that side and automatically traffic will be less (in the old Shillong),” Dhar added.
In the interim, the government is exploring one-way traffic systems in consultation with local headmen.
Further, the deputy chief minister acknowledged that resolving traffic issues involves multiple departments, including transport, home, police, and district administration, and assured that the government is working to address the challenge.
