Shillong, Feb 15: The state government will soon notify a standard operating procedure (SOP) for opening of schools in the state.
The SOP was necessitated due to non-recognition of many schools in Meghalaya under Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), a Central government provision to recognise every school in the country.
Currently, there are over 500 schools not covered under UDISE in the state.

As per the proposed SOP, anyone willing start a school have to apply for permission and show evidence that they have the requisite infrastructure, said Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) special project director Swapnil Tembe after a review meeting on Friday.
Considering performance and enrolment of the school, it will be granted permanent recognition and UDISE code will be generated, he said.
Stating that for UDISE recognition, schools need to obtain some documents before operation, the official lamented that schools were opened in the past without receiving any such recognition.
The government of India has directed all state governments to take care of these unrecognised schools, he said.
