Govt to set up more parking lots in city

Shillong, June 9: The Urban Affairs department is going to set up more parking lots in Shillong to provide relief from the ever-increasing traffic in the congested city.

“The department is coming up with more parking lots to reduce the traffic congestion,” deputy chief minister in-charge of Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar told reporters here on Monday.

Dhar also revealed that random parking of vehicles on the roadside will be legally barred as per a policy approved by the cabinet.

“In the past few months, the cabinet has approved the policy on street parking, so that nobody can park (their vehicles) randomly on the roadside,” he said.

He also informed that in a few months from now, the department will be able to inaugurate few parking lots and this would to a great extent help address the traffic problem in Shillong.

The deputy chief minister, while responding to another query on relocation of 342 families of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong, said the government has not taken a final call on the matter.

On the relocation of hawkers, the deputy CM said the department is in the process of relocating them.

“We are in the process of identifying locations for relocating them, for example Laitumkhrah,” he said.
