Shillong, Sep 2: In a significant step towards employment generation and growth of the tourism sector as a whole, the state government has decided to invest Rs 6.6 crore to support 165 students to pursue BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Management over the next five years.
Announcing this during the launch of Chief Minister Hospitality Scholarship Programme (CMHSP) on Tuesday, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said objective of the scholarship programme is to encourage the youth to take up higher professional education in hospitality.
This will also guide and nurture youth for global opportunities and strengthen the state’s skill workforce in the hospitality sector, he said.
“There will be hundred percent tuition fee support for students pursuing the BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Management at IHM Shillong,” he said.
Altogether 165 students will be supported over five years, with 55 students (one from each block) availing the scholarship in three consecutive batches.
The students must be permanent residents of Meghalaya, having cleared class XII with English as a subject and annual family income below Rs 3 lakh.
There is no age bar for availing the opportunity.
Nomination of students will be based on merit and interest with the final selection done by a state level selection committee.
The state government will have to bear Rs 6.6 crore towards tuition fee of 165 students in the course of five years.
“This means that we are investing around 3.6 lakh per student,” Lyngdoh said.
The students will have to bear expenses of hostels, mess, uniforms and other incidental costs.
