Govt yet to finalise new site for Central Jail

Shillong, Dec 22: Meghalaya government is yet to finalise the new site for the proposed Central Jail, which will later house the inmates of current Shillong District Jail.

“We are still identifying the location for the setting up of the Central Jail. Once the location is finalised and a new jail is constructed, we will shift the present Shillong District Jail,” said deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who is in-charge of Home (Prisons) department.

Earlier, the Home (Jail) department and the Urban Affairs department signed an agreement for shifting the Shillong District Jail to New Shillong Township.

But, the government has reviewed its decision and looking for a new site for the jail.

“We feel that we cannot shift the present jail to New Shillong Township, and instead find a location, which is a little bit outskirts of the city,” he said.
