Guwahati, July 25: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) has posted significant year-on-year growth in both passenger and aircraft movements in the first quarter of the 2025–26 financial year, reinforcing its status as the primary aviation hub for Northeast India.
According to the official record, from April to June 2025, the airport handled 12,470 aircraft movements and 1.81 million passengers, representing a growth of 11.41% and 15.37% respectively compared to the same period last year. The sharp increase is being seen as a direct result of operational enhancements, rising demand for regional connectivity, and expanding infrastructure at the Guwahati-based airport.
An LGBIA spokesperson said the highest single-day footfall was recorded on April 10, when 21,594 passengers moved through the terminal. Airport officials noted that this spike was part of a broader upward trend, driven by both business and leisure travel to and from Northeast India.
LGBIA continued to see strong traffic to and from Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru—its three busiest domestic sectors by passenger volume. These routes remained consistent with previous quarters, reflecting stable intercity demand and airline frequency.
Comparative data from the Airports Authority of India show that in Q1 of FY 2024–25, total aircraft movements stood at 11,193, of which 10,961 were domestic and 232 were international. In Q1 FY 2025–26, domestic air traffic movement rose to 12,232, while international movements increased slightly to 238, taking the total to 12,470.
Passenger movement also saw a significant rise. The total number of passengers handled in Q1 FY 2024–25 was 1,565,948, including 1,544,691 domestic and 21,257 international. In the same period this year, domestic passenger count rose to 1,783,066 and international to 23,593, taking the overall number to 1,806,660.
Officials attributed the growth to increased airline collaboration, improvements in terminal capacity, and ongoing modernisation efforts. “The continued growth in both domestic and international traffic is a strong indicator of rising mobility across the region. LGBIA is committed to further enhancing the travel experience through infrastructure upgrades and better service delivery,” an official source at the airport said.
The airport authority confirmed that several operational improvements were implemented over the past year, including digital check-in systems, optimised gate management, and enhanced passenger amenities. The airport’s expansion plans are also being accelerated to meet rising demand and prepare for even greater volumes in the future.
Guwahati’s LGBIA continues to play a key role in the economic integration of the Northeast with the rest of India and abroad. With back-to-back quarters of double-digit growth, the airport is increasingly being recognised as one of India’s fastest-growing regional aviation hubs.
