Guwahati, May 1: In a significant step toward promoting social inclusion and healthcare equity, Guwahati Refinery, under IndianOil’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, has extended vital financial support to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) to enhance its capacity for Cochlear Implant surgeries—critical for children with severe to profound hearing loss.

As part of the initiative, Guwahati Refinery funded the procurement of advanced medical instruments to establish a dedicated Operation Theatre (OT) at GMCH, specifically for Cochlear Implant procedures. These surgeries offer a life-changing solution for children who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids.

The dedicated OT was formally inaugurated in a recent ceremony at GMCH by Sunil Kanti, Executive Director and Refinery Head of Guwahati Refinery. The event was attended by Prof. (Dr.) Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH, alongside senior doctors, hospital staff, and families of recently treated children.

GMCH stands out as the only medical college in Assam currently performing Cochlear Implant surgeries, a service it has been offering since 2014. However, the previous infrastructure was unable to keep pace with growing demand, resulting in long waiting times for patients. The newly set up, fully equipped OT is expected to significantly reduce waiting periods and make timely surgeries more accessible to underprivileged families.

In a further show of commitment, Guwahati Refinery has also provided CSR funding for the procurement of 10 Cochlear Implant devices, aimed at children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These devices not only restore hearing but also greatly improve the children’s communication skills, social interaction, and overall quality of life.

This initiative reflects IndianOil’s core value of “Care”, highlighting how industry partnerships can drive impactful healthcare outcomes and promote inclusive development for vulnerable communities.
