HC disposes of PIL on street vendors

Shillong, July 28: A PIL requesting more time for licensed vendors to vend from roadsides at Khyndailad (Police Bazar) was disposed of by Meghalaya High Court keeping in view completion of relocation of the licensed vendors to a designated vending zone.

On the public interest litigation (PIL), the court was informed that the government had successfully relocated the vendors by the stipulated date of July 22.

“Since that goal has been achieved, nothing remains in this application,” the court order said on Monday.

“Subject matter of this application was for modification of our earlier order granting limited time to licensed vendors to vend from Police Bazar. It was said that this restricted timing was affecting their business. In those circumstances, we enlarged the time permitting them to vend in the said area,” it stated.

Meanwhile, the petitioner’s counsel raised concerns about the wrongful revocation of licenses for some vendors, which prevented their relocation.

The court decided to consider additional issues, including relocation of vendors from other crowded areas and eviction of unlicensed vendors, in the main PIL on August 5.
