Hek for ‘people’s choice’ on railways in Meghalaya

Shillong, Mar 18: BJP leader and cabinet minister AL Hek has advocated for “people’s choice” to be given priority in taking any decision implementing railway projects in the state.

While Garo Hills is already connected with railway network, a proposed line to Byrnihat just along Meghalaya-Assam border could not become a reality for decades due to stiff opposition from local NGOs even as there is an emerging support from Jaintia Hills in favour of railway connectivity.

Keeping in view the complexity of the public opinions in different regions of the state, Hek said, “If the people want to have a railway, the railway should come… It is up to the choice of the people.”

He was responding to a query on the stiff opposition by NGOs against the government’s move to introduce a railway line in East Jaintia Hills district.
