Himanta is Assam’s Jinnah”: Gaurav Gogoi slams CM for spreading communal poison ahead of polls

Guwahati, June 20: In a blistering attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday accused him of playing divisive politics reminiscent of Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said, “The Chief Minister is acting like Jinnah to cover up his failures. We will not allow that brand of politics on Assamese soil.”

Gogoi warned that the BJP is attempting to replicate Manipur-style sectarian conflict in Assam ahead of the elections. “The BJP, RSS, Bajrang Dal, and VHP are all using religion to distract from their governance failures. This is a strategy to divide the people before the polls,” he said.

He alleged a conspiracy behind recent communal flashpoints like the recovery of beef in Lakhipur, questioning, “Who planted the idea? Who benefits? Everyone involved must be investigated.”

Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of systematically targeting tribal communities and grabbing their land. “Instead of protecting the land and identity of the Bodo, Rabha, Karbi, and Dimasa people, the BJP is handing it over to Ambani and Adani. This island betrayal under the guise of development,” he said.

He also condemned the ongoing evictions across Assam and the unresolved de-voter issue in Barak Valley, vowing continued resistance. “Congress will fight for justice. We’re building a new Assam with the youth, rooted in equality and opportunity,” Gogoi said.

Responding to Sarma’s jibe about “BJP virus” inside Gogoi’s car, the Congress MP retorted, “People don’t care who’s in my car—they want answers from the CM. What happened to Amit Shah’s promise of digging ponds to stop floods? Where’s the land Himanta Biswa Sarma once claimed he’d donate? Instead, tribal land is being snatched.”

On the ONGC gas leak in Sivasagar, Gogoi asked whether the person allegedly responsible had links to BJP leaders, and demanded clarity.

He also defended the appointment of Praful Kumar Das as Congress’s social media chairman, dismissing internal criticism. “He may not come from a political family, but he’s competent. Alongside him, Pratik Bardoloi, son of Pradyut Bardoloi, will serve as co-chairman. We need young, tech-savvy minds. The BJP’s AI propaganda machine must be met with a smarter digital counter,” Gogoi said.

Wrapping up, Gogoi hinted at BJP plans to launch a “fake AI-generated film” about him. “They’re preparing character assassination campaigns. So we’re preparing too—with brains that understand technology.”
