Guwahati, July 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House in New Delhi, briefing him on Assam’s progress across socio-economic indicators and the implementation of key welfare schemes.
During the meeting, Sarma highlighted what he described as “near saturation” of major Central and state-run welfare programs and shared updates on Assam’s development trajectory. He also formally invited the Prime Minister to visit the state on September 8, when the government will inaugurate both the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and the country’s first bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh in Golaghat district.

Sarma presented Modi with a traditional Assamese gamocha and mementoes during the meeting.
Taking to social media after the meeting, the Chief Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Had the privilege of calling upon Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in New Delhi today. Briefed him on Assam’s notable strides across socio-economic indicators and the near saturation of major welfare schemes. On behalf of the people of Assam, I conveyed our anticipation to welcome him on 8th September ~ a moment that will mark another milestone in our state’s development journey.”

Later in the day, Sarma also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and sought the Ministry’s continued support for Assam’s economic growth. He briefed her on recent progress and expressed the state’s intent to scale up development initiatives.
The meeting was also attended by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita, and MPs Kamakhya Tasa, Rameswar Teli, and Kanad Purkayastha.

The Finance Minister’s Office confirmed the meeting with a post on X, stating: “Shri @himantabiswa, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, calls on Smt @nsitharaman at Parliament House. Also present are Shri @PmargheritaBJP, Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles, Hon’ble MP (LS) Shri @KamakhyaTasa, Hon’ble MP (RS) Shri @Rameswar_Teli and Hon’ble MP (RS) Shri @kanadpurkaystha.”
The twin meetings come as Assam gears up for a high-profile phase in its development calendar, with the September 8 visit expected to underscore the Centre’s focus on Northeast India’s growth.
