Housing projects for poor now a den of criminals

Shillong, Oct 31: The incomplete government housing projects supposed to provide shelter to poor people at Nongmensong Lumphira in the city have become a den of criminals, alleged Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP).

The prolonged delay in the housing projects has led to the place becoming a hub for various illegal activities, including drug trafficking, theft, attempted murder, and other serious crimes, said the FKJGP.

The FKJGP Nongmensong Circle submitted a memorandum to deputy chief minister in-charge urban affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar in this regard.

Demanding early completion of the housing projects, FKJGP Nongmensong Circle general secretary Alan Kharkongor said the unlawful activities have caused serious disturbance in daily life of the local residents, creating an environment of fear and insecurity.

“What was meant to be a beneficial project for the vulnerable has instead led to a dangerous situation for the entire community,” he said.

Early completion of the projects will not only restore the local law and order, but ensure that the intended beneficiaries receive the housing support they were promised, he added.
