HYC opposes building of ‘temple’ inside CBI premises

Shillong, Nov 14: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has opposed to an alleged under-construction Hindu temple on the office premises of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at Mawdiangdiang in New Shillong Township.

A structure purported to be a temple is being erected inside the CBI compound, raising concerns of violation of constitutional secularism and state laws, the HYC said in a letter submitted CBI Head of Branch on Friday.

The HYC demanded for immediate verification of the “religious construction” within the CBI premises and suspend the work forthwith pending the verification “to prevent irreversible alteration of the premises or potential violation of law.”

If the construction was done without due permission, HYC president Roykupar Synrem said, legal provisions should be initiated to remove such unauthorised structure and “restore the premises to its original secular state”.

The HYC has asked the CBI to issue a formal clarification on the matter within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the HYC emphasized the petition is not against any faith but aims to safeguard the secular character and public trust in the CBI.
