Tura, Oct 22: A lone candidate, an Independent, has so far filed his nomination papers for the Gambegre bye-election on Tuesday- the second day for filing nominations.
Local youth Sengkrabirth M Marak filed his nomination papers before the returning officer for 56-Gambegre constituency bypoll, making him the first aspirant to do so in a contest where around six other contestants have thrown their hat into the ring.
Nominations were open from Monday but no candidate turned up on the first day. The last day for filing of nominations in October 25 ( Friday).
Sadhiarani Sangma to file nomination on Wednesday
Sitting GHADC MDC from Dengnakpara constituency Smt. Sadhiarani M Sangma will be filing her nomination papers as the All India Trinamool Congress candidate (AITC) for Gambegre bye-election on Wednesday, informed party sources.
Sadhiarani is a two term MDC in the GHADC and this will be her third attempt for the Gambegre assembly seat election. In her second attempt as a Congress candidate, in 2018, she narrowly lost to Saleng A Sangma, who was then with the NCP.
But Saleng Sangma’s switch over to the Congress, after the exit of former chief minister Mukul Sangma, and his “political entourage” to the All India Trinamool Congress for the 2023 state assembly elections paid rich dividends for the new Tura MP.
Saleng retained his Gambegre seat for a record four consecutive elections and also opened the Congress account in Garo Hills as the lone party legislator from this region.
