Injured NEHU students stable; Govt offers out-of-state treatment

Shillong, Nov 25: The two critically injured students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) are on the path of recovery as the state government has extended an offer for their advanced treatment outside the state.

The government has assured that there would be no cost barrier for treatment, if the local facilities fall short.

On November 17, the two students – Daritngen Pohdukhei and Stephanie Shadap – were hit by a speeding car driven by a security guard, who was under influence of alcohol at that time. The driver Permen M Sangma, a security guard at NEIGRIHMS, was arrested.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar provided an update on the condition of the two students saying, one is “quite okay” while the other “needs more time” in hospital.

“Hopefully, they will be okay,” he said.

“However, the government has conveyed that if Shillong facilities aren’t enough, shift them out…for better treatment,” Dhar added, emphasizing support amid ongoing treatment at Nazareth hospital.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Human Rights Commission, (MHRC) has also separately taken suo motu cognizance of alleged neglect at Shillong Civil Hospital, probing staff response.
