CM calls for sustained societal efforts to support girls
Shillong, Oct 13: Meghalaya celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child 2025 under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” with a special programme at Lariti Auditorium, Mawkasiang, where Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma urged for sustained societal efforts to support and protect girls.

The programme, organised by the state Social Welfare Department, highlighted the achievements, resilience, and potential of girls from across the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma opened with a two-minute silence to honour children lost in recent incidents, emphasizing the need for vigilance and protection.

Addressing the students, the chief minister emphasised that the celebration should mark the beginning of sustained societal change in supporting the girl child. He highlighted initiatives such as the establishment of reusable sanitary pad units funded by the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund and produced by local self-help groups, promoting both sustainability and local economic empowerment.
He also outlined new initiatives under the Safe Motherhood Program, including care packets for rural mothers with essential items for newborns produced by self-help groups. He stressed the importance of child safety, noting the role of technology, community programs and collaboration with NGOs and faith-based organizations.

Speaking on the issue of drug abuse, the Chief Minister spoke of strengthened detox and de-addiction facilities, community vigilance and enforcement efforts against illegal networks. He encouraged young girls to think independently, make confident decisions, and uphold their values, emphasizing that even small choices can have long-term consequences.
He concluded by congratulating all stakeholders and urging continued collaboration for meaningful societal change.
Former minister and adviser to the Social Welfare Department, Paul Lyngdoh also attended as the Guest of Honour, alongside M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA, senior officials, representatives of partner organizations, heads of educational institutions and hundreds of students from 50 schools.

During the interactive session, students actively engaged with the Chief Minister, raising concerns and suggestions on a wide range of issues. Discussions included the need for improvement in school lunch quality, enhanced safety measures for girls, the introduction of self-defense classes, and greater support for young athletes and aspiring models. Students also requested a more balanced academic approach to reduce stress, along with expanded access to extracurricular activities, sports infrastructure, and career guidance. The Chief Minister patiently addressed each concern, assuring the students of the Government’s commitment to their holistic development and encouraging them to remain proactive participants in shaping the future of the State.

Earlier, Pravin Bakshi, Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare Department, delivered the opening address, warmly welcoming all participants and acknowledging the students for whom the day was dedicated. Quoting Coco Chanel, he said, “A girl should be two things — who and what she wants,” emphasizing the importance of empowering girls to lead change. He highlighted the Government’s commitment to promoting education, health, and rights of girls through initiatives such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, which has improved school enrollment and reduced dropout rates. He also commended the Shubham Charitable Foundation’s video presentation on the Zero Waste Mission, which focused on eco-friendly menstrual hygiene practices including reusable sanitary pads, and underscored the importance of awareness regarding cyber hygiene and digital safety.
A significant highlight of the event was the felicitation of achievers, recognizing young girls excelling in academics, sports, social service, entrepreneurship, bravery, and community leadership. These achievers, many of whom have overcome personal and societal challenges, were honored by the Chief Minister and other dignitaries for their courage, dedication, and exemplary accomplishments, serving as role models for their peers.

The celebration also featured motivational talks by Miss Daphisha Kharbani, Founder of Majestic Dance Academy, and Miss Anjelina Tynhlaiang, Paralympic athlete, whose inspiring stories encouraged students to pursue their dreams confidently.
A short film on menstrual hygiene and a presentation on the Health and Well-being of a Girl by Dr. N.E. Kharsahnoh, Director of Health and Family Welfare, provided valuable insights into health and wellness.
The programme served as a testament to the Government of Meghalaya’s ongoing commitment to gender equality, child welfare, education, and empowerment, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to thrive as a leader, changemaker, and role model in society.
