Internet, mobile data suspended in Manipur’s 7 districts for 2 days

Guwahati, Nov 16: In view of the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, the state government has imposed a two-day suspension of internet and mobile data services across seven districts, effective from 5:15 PM on Saturday, November 16.
The affected districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur.

The suspension applies to internet and mobile data services, including VSATs, broadband, and VPN services, within the specified areas. However, leased lines and FTTH connections to government offices or entities operating under state government grants are exempt from the suspension, as stated in the official order issued by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi.

The government has warned that any violations of the suspension order will result in legal action. This measure has been taken to curb the potential spread of misinformation and prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.

The suspension of internet and mobile data services was implemented due to concerns over the potential misuse of social media platforms by anti-social elements. The official order highlighted the apprehension that such elements might exploit social media for transmitting inflammatory content, including images, hate speech, and videos, which could incite public passions and exacerbate tensions.

The government expressed fears of serious repercussions for law and order, citing the imminent danger of loss of life, damage to public or private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquillity and communal harmony. The order specifically warned about the spread of false rumours and disinformation through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which could be used to mobilize mobs, leading to incidents of arson, vandalism, and violence.

To thwart the designs and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements, the government deemed it necessary to temporarily suspend internet services. Security forces directed to take steps to restore peace in Manipur

Meanwhile, an official release here said all the security forces have been directed to take necessary steps to restore order and peace. Strict action would be initiated against anyone trying to indulge in violent and disruptive activities. Important cases have been handed over to the NIA for effective investigation.

The security scenario in Manipur has remained fragile for the past few days. Armed miscreants from both communities in conflict have been indulging in violence leading to unfortunate loss of lives and disruption in public order. The public are requested to maintain peace, not believe in rumours and cooperate with the security forces to maintain law and order in the State.
