Shillong, Apr 21: In the wake of a demand for the next chairperson of Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) to be from Garo community, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has hailed the “possibility” of the top post going to a person from Jaintia Hills.

“JSU Central Body expresses strong enthusiasm for the possibility of the MPSC chairman hailing from the Jaintia Hills,” the JSU said in a statement.

Pointing out the region’s contributions to literacy and being the birthplace of many influential figures, the JSU said, “Historical records show the position has largely been held by representatives from Khasi and Garo communities.”

Citing the less representation from Jaintia Hills, the JSU said, “It is vital that the next MPSC chairperson is selected from Jaintia Hills.”

“JSU, along with the people of the region, is optimistic about achieving this goal to ensure balanced representation,” it added.
