KHADC assures to revert delimitation bid

Shillong, Nov 13: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday assured 21 villages in West Khasi Hills district of making necessary legal provisions to keep them under Mawshynrut constituency, hours after their protest against being shifted to Rambrai constituency.

The KHADC said it would amend the KHAD (Constitution of District Councils) (Amendment) Rules, 2024 in the Council’s winter session on December 19 to ensure that the three polling stations covering the 21 villages remain under Mawshynrut constituency.

Deputy chief executive member (CEM) Pynshngain N Syiem assured the protesters that the Executive Committee (EC) of KHADC would review the matter soon placing the necessary amendment in the floor of the House.

According to Syiem, the KHADC had passed the rules seeking delimitation of constituencies for upcoming autonomous district council polls as per recommendation of the delimitation committee.

Accordingly, the three polling stations were included under Rambrai constituency.

“There was a suggestion that since these three polling stations came under Rambrai assembly constituency, why not put them together under Rambrai district council constituency as well,” he said.

“However, the majority are not happy with this decision. Therefore, we have made it clear to them that the EC will definitely review and relook this matter and bring necessary amendments during the upcoming winter session,” he added.
