Khliehrangnah Panchayat:  A Model of Water Conservation and Community Empowerment

Shillong Oct 15: The Khliehrangnah Panchayat in West Jaintia Hills has been awarded the joint third prize in the Best Village Panchayat category at the National Water Awards 2023, recognizing its exceptional efforts in water conservation and management.

The National Water Awards (NWAs) focus on the good work and efforts made by individuals and organisations across the country in attaining the government’s vision of a ‘Jal Samridh Bharat’. The awards are for creating awareness among the people about the importance of water and motivating them to adopt best water usage practices.

The announcement was made today in New Delhi on the occasion of annoucement of 5th National Water Awards. The awards will be given on Oct 22 in New Delhi.

Altogether 38 winners, including joint winners, were announced for the 5th National Water Awards, 2023, in nine categories viz Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best School or College, Best Industry, Best Water User Association, Best Institution (other than school or college), and Best Civil Society

In a remarkable initiative, the Khliehrangnah Panchayat renovated 20 water bodies, including 14 springs and 6 streams, and created a dug-out pond with a capacity of 2,400 cubic meters. These efforts have significantly improved water availability in the region, transforming 135 hectares of previously uncultivated land into productive agricultural fields.

Khliehrangnah’s approach also included the construction of contour trenches and rainwater harvesting systems, alongside afforestation projects that not only rejuvenated the local ecosystem but also enhanced groundwater recharge. The increased water supply has led to higher crop productivity, benefiting local farmers and improving food security in the area.

To ensure the sustainability of these projects, the Panchayat established a community-based monitoring system, empowering villagers to track water quality and prevent illegal activities affecting water sources. Additionally, training sessions and exposure trips to model villages were organized, equipping community members with the necessary skills to maintain their water resources effectively.

This accolade not only highlights Khliehrangnah’s successful water management strategies but also serves as an inspiration for other communities striving for sustainable practices. The villagers will be filled with pride and a renewed commitment to preserving their environment for future generations.
