Kynshi locals seek Hydro Power Project revival

Shillong, Aug 20: The locals at Kynshi have asked the government to initiate plans for the revival of the hydropower project in their area as the people stand to benefit from the development.

The Joint Committee of Local People on Kynshi Hydro Power Project (JCLPKHPP) submitted a letter to Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal on Tuesday, stating that the committee is eagerly anticipating the government to initiate efforts for revival of the Stage I project and also sought clarification from the government.

JCLPKHPP chairman Roshem Myrthong said, “Various stakeholders and local inhabitants who would stand to benefit the most are left stranded,” adding that the committee would like to be informed and apprised if there is a plan to revive the hydro power project as “our very establishment as a committee stems from the introduction of the said power project itself.”

The state government had scrapped the power project in September 2023 after it was found to be financially unviable.
