Mass to mark Pope’s funeral on Saturday

Shillong, Apr 23: Catholic faithful in Shillong will mark the funeral of Pope Francis with a Requiem Mass to be held at Cathedral Church, Laitumkhrah on Saturday.

Requiem Mass will also be held on April 23, 24 and 25 at Cathedral Church, Laitumkhrah at 5:30 pm and at all the parishes of Shillong Archdiocese at a time arranged by the different parishes, said Bedarius Shylla, a church spokesperson.

On the day of the funeral, the Requiem Mass will be held at Cathedral Church, Laitumkhrah and all the parishes under Shillong Archdiocese at 10 am Vatican time i.e. 1:30 IST.

The faithful can also participate in the Funeral Mass through online media, Shylla said.

As per an announcement made by the Vatican, the Pope passed away on April 21 at 7:35 am Vatican time which corresponds to 11:05 am Indian time at his residence at Domus Sanctae Marthae, Vatican City. The cause of death has been declared as stroke, coma and Irreversible cardiovascular collapse.

Meanwhile, the ceremony of certification of the death of Pope Francis was conducted by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell.

As per his will published on April 21, Pope Francis will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.

He will be the first Pope in over a century to be buried outside the St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican.
