Guwahati, Dec 22: With just a day left for the “deadline” served by Assam-based Hindu group Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) for allowing resumption of rituals at Mawjymbuin cave at Mawsynram, the KSP stood firm on its stand to go ahead with its protest along Meghalaya-Assam border.
While Meghalaya government has maintained that it had least say in the matter since the decision to ban the rituals was taken by local dorbar shnong which has authority over the site, and not the government, the Hindu group has been demanding arrangement of a meeting with local stakeholders.
The cave, renowned for its natural Shiva Lingam formation, has been closed to Hindu rituals since August 2024, following a ban imposed by the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong (village council).
On the other hand, the KSP had set a deadline of December 23 for the Meghalaya government to arrange a meeting with all stakeholders and facilitate a site visit to the Mawjymbuin cave.
Failing this, the organisation has announced a protest demonstration at Byrnihat on December 24.
“This is our final request to the authorities concerned to arrange a meeting for us with all the stakeholders and arrange a visit to the site within a stipulated time,” said Satya Ranjan Bora, president of KSP.
Announcing KSP’s decision to stage a demonstration at Byrnihat on December 24, Borah said, “We are doing our constitutional duties provided to us in Article 51 (A) of the Constitution of India. In a democratic country like India, we have the right to show our demonstration anywhere in the country for any cause.”
Demanding intervention of chief minister Conrad Sangma, they said, We would like to convey our sincere request to the office of Meghalaya chief minister to look into this matter and to do the needful at an early date.”
Meanwhile, Borah also claimed that two other organisations – Sanatani Jagrata Prahari and Hindu Surakshya Sena – have confirmed their participation in the protest.
