Shillong, Nov 16: With its vibrant culture and unparalleled energy, Meghalaya is setting its sights on becoming Asia’s music capital.
This vision was reinforced on Friday as the state hosted the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, where Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia unveiled the foundation for the ambitious ‘Skywalk Project’ at Mawkdok in the East Khasi Hills.
The Cherry Blossom Festival launched in 2016 is the first autumn Cherry Blossom Festival in the world.
“Meghalaya has the potential to not just be India’s music capital but Asia’s,” declared Scindia during the event, praising the festival’s dynamic atmosphere and the leadership of Chief Minister Sangma
The skywalk, set to redefine tourism in the state, will offer visitors a thrilling opportunity to experience Mawkdok’s breathtaking vistas of verdant valleys framed by lush hills. A popular stop along the Sohra tourism circuit, Mawkdok is poised to attract even more travelers with this innovative project, which highlights the state’s commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure.
“Tourism is a key pillar of Meghalaya’s development strategy,” said Sangma. “With initiatives like the skywalk and the unwavering support of the DoNER Ministry, we aim to showcase Meghalaya to the world.”
The festival also celebrated Meghalaya’s deepening ties with Japan, with the ‘Japan Arena’ stealing the spotlight. Featuring Japanese culture, cuisine, and music, the arena underscored the unique collaboration between the two regions. Sangma expressed his gratitude, stating that this partnership would allow the world to discover Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and its connections with other Asian nations.
The event reached its crescendo with electrifying performances by international pop sensation Akon and legendary group Boney M, captivating the audience at Bhoirymbong in Ribhoi district. Scindia, impressed by the energy of the crowd, remarked, “I’ve never seen this level of enthusiasm at any concert in India.”
As the Cherry Blossom Festival grows into a global cultural phenomenon, projects like the skywalk at Mawkdok symbolize Meghalaya’s bold aspirations. From redefining tourism to emerging as a musical powerhouse, the state is carving out its place on the global stage.
