Meghalaya Govt to roll out structured pay system for teachers by December

Structured pay system for teachers by December: Govt

Shillong, Oct 27: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday announced that the much-awaited pay structure for teachers of various categories will be introduced by December this year.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has already accepted the demand for a structured pay system and the government is working out the modalities to implement it.

“The Chief Minister has accepted that the government will come up with the structured pay system within December 2025,” Rymbui told reporters.

The government is considering a proposal for taking over 3,332 SSA schools that have submitted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to hand over their management to the government.

Consultations have started with various stakeholders, including organisations representing SSA employees, who have been demanding a structured pay system and job security.

On other demands of the teachers, he said, “Once we overcome this issue (pay structure), all other issues will fall into place.”

Meanwhile, the minister emphasised that the government needs to balance its financial resources to improve the social sector, including education, without compromising other sectors.

“By having the pay structure, it does not mean that the other sectors will suffer,” he said, adding, “Let us see what the government will do in consultation with other stakeholders within these two months”

He also appreciated the “open minded” approach of the teachers’ organisations during various consultations with the government.

“They know that there are difficulties…,” he said.

Asked if the exercise was part of government’s proposal to implement the Meghalaya Education Grant (MEG), Rymbui said the exercise is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the education system, which was pledged by the chief minister in 2018.

The government aims to streamline the education system, with only two structures of schools – government and government-aided, besides private schools.

The Minister expressed optimism that the government and stakeholders can work together to resolve the issues facing the education sector.

According to him, the ongoing reform process is aiming at addressing various issues identified in the education sector over the past five to seven years.
