Shillong, Aug 7: The Meghalaya government has decided to purchase a 14-acre property through the Meghalaya Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (MIDFC) to develop a Slalom course in Umtham River, Ri Bhoi.
“This will be the only course of its kind in the entire country once it is fully completed in terms of the overall development that takes place there,” Sangma told reporters after chairing a cabinet meeting held here on Thursday.
“There are about 14 acres area which includes about 8-9 acres of tree plantation across the streets which is coming up as a package,” he said while informing that the government will spend approximately Rs 21 crore to purchase the property.
Meghalaya has a strong record in water sports, having won five medals in the National Games.
“Therefore, we are very keen to promote this and in line with that we have decided to build up a full course a Slalom course at Umthan River in Ri Bhoi.
The course will be the only one of its kind in the country, providing a unique opportunity for athletes to train and compete,” Sangma added further.
The project aims to promote water sports, particularly Slalom, River Canoeing, and Kayaking, in the state.
