Meghalaya’s health centre network set to hit 700 by March 2027, CM reviews health push

Shillong, Sept 9: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday reviewed the state’s health infrastructure push, with officials reporting that over 110 Sub Centres have been completed in the last two years and another 200 are on track to be finished by March 2027 — a expansion that would take Meghalaya’s total Sub Centre count to 700.

The review, which covered Sub Centres, Primary and Community Health Centres, and hospital projects across all districts, comes as the state looks to extend primary healthcare access into rural and hard-to-reach areas.
Several health facilities — including those at Bajengdoba, Byrnihat, Mahendraganj, Raksamgre and Mylliem Umthlong — are undergoing upgradation or new construction and are nearing completion, with the government targeting January 2027 to bring them into operation. A 100-bedded hospital at Resubelpara is also expected to be activated soon.

Once complete, the ongoing works are expected to add more than 600 beds to the state’s existing capacity of roughly 7,000 beds across government health facilities. Officials said the state has spent around Rs 750 crore on health infrastructure over the past five years through various funding sources.

The infrastructure push comes alongside notable gains in health outcomes. According to a report titled Meghalaya’s Health Trends: Progress and Priorities, infant deaths in the state fell by nearly 40 percent over five years — from 3,064 in 2020-21 to 1,833 in 2025-26 — while maternal deaths dropped by about 57 percent over the same period.

Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6, 2023-24) points to similar progress: institutional deliveries rose from 51.4 percent recorded in NFHS-4 to 65.6 percent, and further to 79 percent in 2025-26; full immunisation coverage among children climbed from 63.8 percent to 75.3 percent; and household health insurance coverage jumped from 34.6 percent to 74.9 percent — now above the national average.
