MoU on Kynshi project cancelled

Shillong, Oct 23: The state government has cancelled the MoU signed for Kynshi power project following the company declared the project as not feasible, informed the minister.

Although, meanwhile, the developer Athena Power had proposed a hybrid model – run-of-the-river (ROR) and pumped storage project (PSP) – instead, the company has not been prompt in its involvement so far.

Despite the power department writing to the company, it has not yet to submitted a detailed presentation on the hybrid project and also skipped a meeting scheduled by the department on October 16 citing “preoccupation”, according to Mondal.

The state government is keen on ROR because of the component of state share in it unlike the PSP model.

“We will again write to them what is on their mind…otherwise we will keep the option open for others,” he said.

Asked about the concern over exposure to uranium deposits after construction of the dam, he allayed the apprehension saying, “It’s an old issue. If they go for PSP, we don’t need to raise the dam’s height that much.”

However, he said a hybrid model would be better for Meghalaya due to the heavy monsoon rains in the state.

“If it’s only PSP, the run-off water has to be thrown out,” he said.
